"The Beast Known as Kotobuki -bird-" 2017

This piece was inspired by “A Beast called Kotobuki” by Shigemitsu Enrousai, an ukiyo-e artist from the late Edo period.The modern world is overflowing with countless images, and therefore it is extremely difficult to come up with an entirely novel idea. However, this proliferation of images gives rise to opportunities to combine existing images to form new ones, as exemplified by “A Beast called Kotobuki”.

《寿という獣　酉》　2017　/　木版画

本作は、江戸時代後期の浮世絵師、遠浪斎重光の「十二支すべての特徴を備える不思議な動物」を描いた作品《寿という獣》に着想を得て制作しています。現代は、様々なイメージが溢れ、全く新しい物を産み出す事はとても難しい時代です。しかし、裏を返せば、様々なイメージに溢れている現代だからこそ、「寿という獣」の様に、既存のイメージを組み合わせることで、新しい物を創造する事が出来る時代なのだと感じています。
